Mayor announces likely date for med school groundbreaking

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says ground will likely be broken for the IU med school October 23rd.

Winnecke made the announcement during a candidates forum with Democratic mayoral candidate Gail Riecken.

The State Budget Committee meets October 12th to consider releasing the funds for the med school.

The Indiana University Board of Trustees gave its final approval for the downtown medical complex last month.

The Indiana Legislature approved $25.2 million for the IU and USI portions of the medical campus earlier this year. Ivy Tech was left out, for now. UE is contributing $6 million of its own.

The Evansville City Council has approved a $57 million bond for the campus and related development in a six-block area bounded by Locust, Cherry, Fourth, and Sixth streets.

The building will feature classrooms, an amphitheater, and a simulation center.
