Official: Ground could be broken for an I-69 bridge by 2020

A leader in the effort to build an I-69 bridge between Evansville and Henderson says he hopes to break ground in 2020.

Bridgelink Board Member Brad Schneider says a downsized route stretching from near the south end of Weinbach Avenue in Evansville to just south of Henderson reduces the cost from $1.4 billion to about $850 million.

Schneider says the bridge will consist of four lanes instead of six, and drivers will be charged tolls.

He tells WNIN that INDOT is working on a revenue study that will determine how much money tolls could produce. He says the next step will be securing state and federal money.

Schneider says the bridge plan would shift trucks and other through traffic to the new span and reduce traffic on the aging Twin Bridges.
