A ribbon-cutting ceremony for new playground equipment at Wesselman Park has been postponed because of vandalism.
Mayor Winnecke’s office had planned to celebrate the installation of the ADA-compliant equipment Friday afternoon.
But a message from the mayor’s office says the event has been postponed because the new equipment was vandalized.
Spokeswoman Ella Johnson-Watson says people got into playground, apparently stole some pieces of the equipment, and left a lot of footprints.
It’s not clear how long the repairs will take or when the ribbon-cutting will be re-scheduled.
Ronald McDonald Charities issued a $12,000 grant to the Evansville Parks Foundation last fall toward installation of the new equipment. The Parks Department funded the remaining $31,000 for the project.
The old playground structure was more than 20 years old and no longer complied with the Americans with Disabilities Act. That equipment was removed last week.
