$25 million budgeted for med school; None for Ivy Tech

Legislative leaders have approved funding for the Indiana University School of Medicine planned for Downtown Evansville, but no money for Ivy Tech’s portion of the project.

The final budget proposal provides $19.2 million for IU and $6 million for USI. Supporters were hoping for nearly $50 million.

Ivy Tech Chancellor Jonathan Weinzapfel told WNIN earlier this year about the school’s plans for the downtown campus. He said the school wanted to move all its health science and nursing programs downtown.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has said the med school can be built in phases. It’s expected to open in time for the fall semester of 2017.
