Dozens of people carrying signs and a state representative with a bullhorn protested the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in downtown Evansville Monday.
Opponents of the law signed by Governor Pence last week rallied at the Four Freedoms Monument and along Riverside Drive. Some motorists honked in support, many didn’t, but WNIN couldn’t find anyone on the street that didn’t support the protesters.
Democrat Gail Riecken was the only state legislator from the Evansville area to vote against the measure. She told the crowd that the real majority of Hoosiers want to repeal what she called "this terrible law."
Republican Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has also expressed concerns about the law, saying it sends the “wrong message” about Indiana and does not represent the people of Evansville.
Supporters say the law is similar to one passed by many states and at the federal level, but Indiana does not have any laws specifically protecting the LGBT community.
