Snow days to be made-up online

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Board has chosen the “virtual option” to make-up four snow days.

The School Board approved the recommendation made by EVSC Superintendent David Smith to conduct four “virtual” make-up days: April 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th. May 4th will be a virtual day for McGary Middle School only.

Each week, teachers will assign lessons to students on Mondays. Work will take place after school hours, but with support from teachers online through Saturday. Assignments will be due the following Monday.

It’s the first time the EVSC has adopted virtual learning, which is offered through the Indiana Department of Education.

Officials tell the Courier and Press it was the not the top choice in a survey of parents, teachers, and staff. Adding four days at the end of the school year received the highest vote totals.

But School Board President Mike Duckworth called virtual learning a “very good plan” and “the best option.”

Smith says about 88 percent of EVSC families Internet access at home. Students can also use computers at EVSC partners, including public libraries, the Boys and Girls Club, and the Dream Center.
