Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has delivered his State of the City address, touting economic development, infrastructure improvements, and public safety -- while taking unilateral action on a park project.
The mayor told the Rotary Club of Evansville that the state of the city is strong, and getting stronger. He pointed to projects like the IU medical school, the Lloyd-41 cloverleaf, and the new baseball-softball complex.
Meantime, he announced action on the original proposed site of the ballfields, the former Roberts Stadium property. He said the city will plant trees around the perimeter of the proposed Roberts Park on Arbor Day, with the Parks Foundation accepting donations for tree plantings at the site.
The city council has refused to grant the mayor’s request for $1.5 million in start-up money for the park.
Winnecke also proposed an ordinance that would require a financial impact statement with all ordinances that the city council votes on.
