Winter weather eats up snow days

Some area school kids have lost a day of summer vacation, because of this week’s frigid and snowy weather.

Thursday’s snow day was the fourth consecutive day off for many local schools, including the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation.

Warrick County, Mount Vernon, and North Posey schools have all missed three days this week. Monday was a scheduled day off for Presidents Day.

By Wednesday, those school districts had already exhausted makeup days built into their school calendars.

The next plan for those districts — if cancellations continue — is to add days on to the end of the school year.

The EVSC was one of few Southwestern Indiana districts that was supposed to be in session on Monday, using the holiday to make up a November snow day. That snow day will now be made up on April 6th, Tuesday will be made up on April 17, and Wednesday’s makeup day — tacked onto the end of the school year — is May 22.

EVSC spokeswoman Marsha Jackson tells the Courier and Press that officials will look for guidance from the state and the Evansville Vanderburgh School Board on how to make up Thursday’s cancellation.
