Tourism important to state, city

A new report shows tourism is Indiana’s 6th-largest industry.

Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann and the Indiana Office of Tourism Development say travel and tourism supported more than 187,000 jobs in Indiana and contributed $10.3 billion in revenue in 2013. That's $200 million more than 2012.

The head of Evansville’s Convention and Visitors Bureau, Bob Warren, tells WNIN News that one project will soon bring baseball and softball players to Vanderburgh County. The ballfields are being installed next to the Goebel Soccer Complex off North Green River Road.

Warren also says he's "hopeful" that a downtown convention hotel will be built soon, because the city is loosing millions of dollars in convention business every year.

The hotel project stalled last month, but city officials are working on a new proposal for a less-expensive facility with about the same number of hotel rooms.
