Mayor Lloyd Winnecke remains confident that the IU Medical School will be funded.
On the same day last week that Mayor Winnecke announced the downtown hotel project had collapsed, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education met and did not recommend funding for the downtown Medical School.
But Winnecke tells WNIN that the project has the backing of the legislature and the governor’s office, and he’s confident the funding will be there.
Winnecke points out that the education commission didn’t recommend any funding for the med school last year, but the legislature went on to approve $2 million for design and planning.
He also points out that USI officials told the commission it wants to replace the current medical facilities at the West Side campus in preparation for the move downtown.
