Plane turns around with smoke in cockpit

An aircraft has been released from Evansville Regional Airport after quickly returning to the airport Sunday evening.

American Airlines Flight 5006 departed for Charlotte, North Carolina but pilots turned the plane around and returned when they reported smoke in the cockpit.

There was no fire visible when the plane came back to the terminal.

Evansville Regional spokeswoman Dianna Page tells WNIN News that airport fire and rescue teams speculated that the problem may have been caused by de-icing fluid, which was sprayed on the plane in the snowy weather.

But Page says she doesn’t know the official cause of the incident.

A member of the flight crew was checked out by a medical team.

The plane was kept in Evansville overnight to be checked out by mechanics, and then released.
