The coming convention center hotel and IU Medical School in downtown Evansville are supposed to generate demand for the businesses and housing that will be needed by visitors and the medical school. But it’s not happening…at least not yet.
Local real estate appraiser and consultant David Matthews tells WNIN News there will be more demand in the downtown area, but he’s not seeing it right now. "The overall impact will definitely be positive. The new hotel is going to have an immediate pop, with the conventions coming in. At some point, people are going to decide that downtown is the exciting place to be, to have an office, or boutique or restaurant. Those are all in the offing, but nobody's building them yet."
Matthews will talk more about downtown real estate during our Trend show this Friday at noon central time, including a historical comparison on development in the downtown area with what we can expect from the convention center hotel and medical school projects.
