Haier to open tech center in Evansville, create 50 jobs

A China-based appliance maker plans to open its first U.S. product technical center in Evansville.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has announced that Haier America will open the tech center, bringing with it 50 jobs and possible future growth.

Debbie Dewey of the Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville says Haier will make a $5 million investment, and will seek a $1.3 million local incentive from the city.

The location for the new business is not yet finalized, but Mayor Winnecke tells WNIN News that the proposed site is in the downtown area.

Haier hopes to have the local center up and running in the first quarter of 2015.
