Posey County is taking control of the New Harmony Bridge.
Posey County Commissioners have voted to accept ownership of the bridge at the prompting of a community group made up of residents from both sides of the Wabash River who hope to reopen the span.
The two-lane New Harmony Bridge was built in 1930 and operated as a toll bridge for decades, before officials shut it down more than two years ago because of its deteriorating condition.
Posey County Commissioner Jim Alsop tells the Evansville Courier & Press he still believes the bridge's future should be a state matter, but saw no other options.
Bridge supporters say the county is in a better position to seek funding for the needed repairs.
