EVSC Teamsters contract expiring

Teamsters employed by the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation are facing a deadline to accept what the EVSC calls its ‘final’ contract offer.

The current contract for bus drivers, bus aides, custodians, special education assistants and secretaries expires Monday.

Negotiations between the EVSC and Local 215 representatives started last fall, and School Board President Chris Kiefer says Teamster contracts have been extended three times.

The final offer includes a 2-percent value raise for employees after factoring in the cost of an additional two months of health insurance coverage for those employees who had requested to stay on the current plan.

Union members rejected the offer and made a counter-offer. Teamsters President Chuck Whobrey tells the Courier and Press that he and his members weren’t told the 2 percent raise would be affected by extending the health coverage. He says that would affect their raises forever.
