Demolition, renovations planned for Haynie's Corner

The city of Evansville wants to demolish a former drug store, renovate two apartment buildings, and build new houses in the Haynie’s Corner area.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and the Evansville Brownfields Corporation is seeking proposals to rehabilitate the former Maybelle and Montrose apartment buildings in the city’s Arts District. They also want to sell three sites on Adams Avenue for single-family homes, and to demolish the former Haynie’s Corner drug store.

Brownfields Coordinator Carolyn Rush says the original drug store was destroyed by fire in 1944, and the current building has no “historic integrity.”

The plan also calls for a public parking lot next to the Theatre Gallery on Adams, with access from both Adams and Washington. It would accommodate events at the Alhambra Theatre, as well as other activities in the Arts District.
