Two firefighters, others honored for life-saving rescue

The Evansville Fire Department’s Merit Commission has honored two firefighters and four responding companies for saving a life.

The commission says a passer-by activated the emergency button outside Station 3 at Franklin and 4th Avenue on the night of Oct. 6, 2012, alerting firefighters to a blaze at a nearby home.

Firefighter Dusten Cline and other firefighters found smoke coming from the eaves of the house at 904 N. Fourth Ave., and heard someone call for help from inside. Captain Jim Pauli forced entry and privates Cline and Shawn Wiethop entered the smoke-filled house. They safely carried a woman out.

Both Cline and Wiethop received Bronze Merit awards. Engine 3, Rescue 3, Quint 5 and Engine 10 were also cited for their work at the fire scene.
