Lampost project moving ahead

An effort to make Evansville’s Historic District safer and brighter is moving forward.

Neighbors have raised $97,000 toward Phase I of a streetlight project in a four-block area, bordered by Riverside Drive, Cherry Street, Southeast First Street and Chandler Avenue.

Elmer Buchta of the Old Evansville Historic Association tells the Courier and Press that the lights will be “historically-appropriate”, bright enough to enhance safety but dim enough for a romantic walk.

One of the 1880’s-style lights is already installed in the 600 block of Southeast First.

Phase I of the project is expected to cost about $240,000, and will erect 22 lights, each 12 feet tall. Buchta says the goal is to start construction this summer.
