Woman arrested after apartment fire

An arrest has been made in connection with an apartment fire in Evansville.

Police have arrested 47-year-old Michelle Hershberger following the blaze that gutted an entire building at Sugar Mill Creek Apartments on North Green River Road.

Authorities say Hershberger is a special needs patient at ResCare, where she allegedly told a supervisor that voices inside her head told her to start the fire. The Courier and Press reports she faces a preliminary charge of arson.

A probable cause affidavit states Hershberger is one of three ResCare residents that live in the unit where authorities say Wednesday night’s blaze started. She allegedly used a lighter to set fire to curtains.

The fire damaged or destroyed nine units. No people were injured, but a dog and a cat reportedly perished in the blaze.
