Fire destroys Vincennes building

Fire has destroyed a century-old building in Vincennes.

Vincennes firefighters found flames shooting from the Watson Flatiron Building on Washington Avenue, when they arrived Monday.

Fire Chief Gordon Becher tells the Vincennes Sun-Commercial that the fire apparently started on the second floor of the vacant building, which was without electricity or natural gas service.

Investigators are trying to determine how the blaze started.

Becher says streets alongside the two-story triangular brick building will remain closed until it can be demolished. He says the gutted structure could collapse.

The Watson Flatiron Building was constructed in 1908 and has housed drug stores and restaurants over the years.
