Coal mine accident kills Princeton man

A man has been killed in an accident at a Gibson County coal mine.

It happened early Tuesday at Gibson County Coal LLC’s mine at 6880 W. County Road 200-North. The Evansville Courier and Press identifies the victim as 41-year-old Timothy Memmer of Princeton.

A statement from the company indicates Memmer and another worker “were performing maintenance work on a piece of mining equipment underground when an unexpected movement of the equipment” injured Memmer. The other worker was not hurt.

The company’s statement says “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Memmer family,” and the company asks for support to Memmer’s family and his fellow miners during what it calls an “extremely difficult time.”

The Gibson County Coroner’s Office is investigating the accident.
