There are hopes to establish a museum recognizing Evansville’s military contribution during World War Two. WNIN’s Daniel Moore has this report. Evansville’s Freedom Heritage Museum has not been built yet, but its supporters have already named its first executive director. Jack Buttrum will be in charge of the museum’s programs and events under a board of directors. The potential site will be a vintage aircraft hangar near Evansville Regional Airport. The cost is projected at between 7 and 9 million dollars. Five years ago, Buttrum and others, began thinking that Evansville needed something to highlight locally built P-47 fighter aircraft in Evansville. The plan for the Freedom Heritage Museum is to include spotlighting Republic Aviation, the Evansville Shipyard, as well as local World War II veterans. The museum organizers already possess a P-47 engine and will begin collecting photographs, artifacts and personal stories from veterans. Buttrum served for six years on the board of Ivy Tech Community College and he headed the board for three years as well. Freedom Heritage Museum has obtained non-profit status and its mission is to recognize for future generations Evansville’s essential role in the war effort. For WNIN, I’m Daniel Moore.
