House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was in Indianapolis Friday for the Young Democrats of America national convention. Pelosi’s remarks focused on the diversity of ideas within the Democratic Party.
Pelosi highlighted what she called the Democratic Party’s legacy of creative solutions to complex problems facing the country. She pointed to recent examples, like legislation passed by the U.S. House to combat pay inequality and to raise the minimum wage.
She pointed to the diversity of the U.S. House – 60 percent of its members are women, people of color or a part of the LGBTQ community.
"So that's a beautiful thing. The beauty is in the mix," Pelosi says. "And I say to our members: our diversity is our strength. Our unity is our power."
Pelosi says there are more challenges to tackle, like comprehensive immigration reform and combating climate change.
“But in order to do that however, we must win the next election very big,” Pelosi says.
Pelosi’s remarks focused on the Democrats’ platform heading into the 2020 election, she also highlighted the need to bridge divides among and across parties.
“We have a big difference between Republicans and Democrats in our county. But as we fight those fights, we have another message from our founders: From many one – e pluribus unum,” Pelosi says.
A number of 2020 presidential candidates spoke at the conference, including South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Marianne Williamson.
