End of Life Care Not Just a Topic for Old People

An idea spawned by a conversation in New Harmony is growing. The third annual Advance Care Planning Conference is being held at USI Wednesday.

Organizers are expecting a full house at the University of Southern Indiana Wednesday for the conference called "Sharing the Experience".

What has become an annual gathering is one result of a program started five years ago that WNIN reported on extensively called "New Harmony Conversations".

The conference is designed to provide required continuing education credits for health care and medical professionals. Attendees will hear the latest on advanced care directives, or end of life care plans as they're known. Other topics include the latest on the adoption of advance care planning in Indiana, specifically how the technique is being used in nursing homes to help start conversations among families with loved ones in those facillities.

WNIN's Steve Burger talked with the conference's keynote speaker, author Kimberly C. Paul about what is happening nationwide with end of life initiatives.

Steve had a wide ranging conversation with Paul about the Live Well, Die Well tour, why she thinks baby boomers will finally be the group that forces wider adoption of advance care planning and whether she can describe her work in three words. Enjoy this digital-only content from WNIN.
