Motorized scooters would need license plates under a bill approved by an Indiana House committee.
The bill sets a $17.30 charge for registering scooters with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and a $10 annual excise tax charge.
The bill doesn't include a requirement that scooter drivers have insurance.
Evansville police Sgt. Jason Cullum tells the Evansville Courier & Press that the bill is a good first step, but he hopes legislators will also look at issues of insurance and scooter operators who have lost their driver's licenses.
The committee voted unanimously Tuesday to forward the proposal to the full House.
