Indiana House Bill Proposes Motor Scooter Licenses

If a bill before the Indiana Legislature becomes law, motor scooter drivers will need to have their bikes registered and get a plate from the BMV. WNIN’s Daniel Moore has more on the story.

A bill to regulate motorized scooters in the state of Indiana inched closer to law Tuesday as a result of a vote in the Indiana House that was a unanimous “Yes.”

According to the Evansville Courier and Press, the bill proposes a cost of $17.30 for drivers of the vehicles to receive a plate and be registered with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The cost also comes with an excise tax charge of $10, and does not require carrying insurance.

Rep. David Wolkins, R-Winona Lake, presented the bill that Evansville Police Sgt. Jason Cullam says his department would support, adding he’d like to see attention to other related issues including insurance for scooter drivers and operators who’ve lost their driver’s licenses.

Cullam also said if the bill becomes law, investigations of lost vehicles and identification of other bikes will be aided.

For WNIN, I’m Daniel Moore.
