Incumbent U.S. Representative Mark Messmer went before the Evansville Rotary Club Tuesday. WNIN’s John Gibson was there:
The 8th District Republican fielded questions submitted by club members two weeks before the midterm election.
On the issue of affordability, Messmer pointed to efforts to reduce government regulation:
"And so one of the efforts we made this past 2 years was to reduce that regulatory burden and regulatory cost that touches a broad range of things."
Messmer did not mention the Iran War or President Trump’s tariffs as part of the affordability issue.
On the contentious issue of data centers, Messmer pointed to bipartisan legislation that calls on companies to pay for their own infrastructure and not impact consumer utility bills.
Ultimately, he said the issue should be up to local governments:
"There's parts of Indiana that want them and parts of Indiana that don't, and that's perfectly fine and the way it should be."
As for health care costs, Messmer touted a bill that would address the enormous amount of money made by insurance companies since the enactment of Obama Care:
"It doesn't take away the Affordable Care Act but it gives consumers, it gives small business owners a choice."
Messmer thanked his Democratic opponent, Mary Allen, for a civil campaign.
Allen, who is a member of Rotary, will address the group next Tuesday.
