Indiana's jobless rate drops

Indiana’s jobless rate is down, but winter weather caused some problems.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says the state’s unemployment rate dipped .4 percent to 6.4 percent in January. That’s the lowest rate since 2008, and it’s lower than the current U.S. rate.

But while 4,600 jobs were created in manufacturing and 1,400 in financial activities, Indiana lost 7,100 private sector jobs mainly due to extreme winter weather.

Still, the state says Indiana’s jobless rate is lower than all four neighboring states. And officials say claims for unemployment benefits were nearly 6,000 below those of January 2013.
