Hearty Persian eggplant dish warms the soul

Cass Herrington

WNIN's Cass Herrington visited Café Arazu's kitchen on a rainy fall evening and met owners Penny and Ben Nejad to hear the story behind the restaurant's signature appetizer.

Ben, who identifies himself as Persian says his favorite childhood recipe, kashkeh bademjoon – a baked eggplant dish -- is best served up on chilly nights because of its warming spices and hearty meat and lentil filling.

And it turns out, his American wife Penny knows how to make it, perhaps even better than his mother.
