A school board candidate who declared his party affiliation was the top vote-getter in the EVSC race. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
Conservative Pastor Steve Ary declared himself a Republican and won an at-large seat on the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Board.
Ary talked about his goals:
"The first thing I want to do is bring in weapons detection systems to protect our children, and to protect the staff. Obviously, I want to help out the students, the discipline in the classroom, I want to help out with the bullying issues."
GOP Party Chairman Kyhle Moers supports adding party affiliation to school board races, which was approved by the state legislature:
"I think that everybody is informed by political ideology in one way or another. And declaring your party on the ballot is just a way of making known where you're coming from on decisions."
Newcomer Lindsey Patterson and longtime school board member Mike Duckworth won seats.
Incumbents Melissa Moore and David Hollingsworth were defeated.
