Firefighters evacuated people from the Bally’s Hotel on Evansville’s riverfront due to a hazardous leak. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
Crews were dispatched to the eleven-story hotel shortly before 2:00 Thursday afternoon for a report of smoke on the top floor.
EFD Assistant Chief Jerrod Brown says it turned out to be something else:
"Our companies arrived, went to investigate it, determined it actually was not smoke, it was a refrigerant leak due to some work that was being done on the roof."
Brown says the refrigerant created a breathing hazard:
"Because of that we ensured that everyone was on air that was working on those floors, evacuated everyone off of that floor, started air monitoring, ventilated it out, and we currently have about 15 people that were exposed to that."
It was not clear if any of the evacuated people were taken to the hospital.
Crews left the hotel at about 3 p.m.
