Officials have celebrated a major milestone for the new I-69 bridge. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
Indiana Governor Mike Braun, Transportation Secretary Matt Ubelhor, and INDOT Commissioner Lyndsay Quist visited Evansville Friday to announce the “substantial completion” of Section 3 of the I-69 Ohio River Crossing.
The section includes new ramps from I-69 to near the river, east of U.S. 41.
Governor Braun thanked local officials for their push to get the huge project to this point:
"Want to thank everyone, especially the local leaders that never let this get out of sight. Here we are."
The next phase is the four-lane bridge itself.
Work is expected to start next year with the span scheduled to open in 2031.
Plans call for collecting tolls on the new bridge and keeping one of the existing Twin Bridges for local traffic.
