You may notice water flowing out of fire hydrants during the next two weeks. WNIN’s John Gibson tells us why:
The Evansville Water and Sewer Utility says it’s flushing hydrants throughout the water distribution system as part of routine maintenance.
The utility says hydrant flushing helps maintain the reliability and quality of tap water.
Officials say during the process, crews open selected hydrants to allow water to flow through the water mains at a high rate.
It helps circulate fresh disinfected water throughout the system, remove naturally occurring sediment and mineral deposits that can accumulate in water mains, and maintain water quality.
The flushing program also allows crews to inspect, operate, and service fire hydrants to help make sure they’re functioning when needed for firefighting.
Customers in areas where flushing is taking place may notice temporary discolored water or changes in water pressure.
If you see discolored water, you’re encouraged to run a cold-water faucet for several minutes until the water becomes clear.
