Residents attending Tuesday's Posey County Commissioners meeting groaned when they learned about an agreement with a data center developer. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:
Commission President Bill Collins answered a question from Mt. Vernon resident Kelly Collins, saying he couldn’t identify the potential developer because commissioners signed a non-disclosure agreement:
"We signed a NDA, not with a data company...hang on a minute, we sit here and let you speak, you can let us speak, thank you. We did sign an NDA with a development company. I don't even know...we have nothing brought in front of us yet."
Penny Padget of Wadesville is a certified geologist who warned of potential massive water usage:
"Are you guys willing to install monitoring wells to check the water level or to check the water quality? Because if the wells go dry it's too late, the aquifer's been depleted."
Many of the residents asked for a moratorium on such centers.
Some suggested it be built at the AB Brown site where it would have access to river water.
The Posey Area Plan Commission is considering amendments to a county ordinance that would regulate data centers.
