A utility company plans to build a natural gas plant in Spencer County. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
Indiana Michigan Power has requested approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission for a 15-hundred megawatt natural gas plant at its Rockport site.
The company says it’s needed to increase capacity and meet the projected energy demand across Indiana.
The gas plant would be built on the site of the company’s retiring coal units at Rockport.
I&M says the site will evolve for other forms of power generation and create opportunities for current and future employees in the Rockport community.
The company says the project will not impact plans to reduce customer rates.
The new Rockport Energy Center is expected to create roughly 1,200 construction jobs and retain 30 to 40 current employees.
I&M anticipates a decision from the IURC in early 2027, with construction possibly beginning later in the year and the plant possibly opening in mid-2030.
