The investigation continues into a stubborn fire on Evansville’s West Side early Monday. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:
Central Dispatch received multiple calls about the blaze in the 800 block of North 4th Avenue, off Fulton, at about 1:40 a.m.
When firefighters arrived, they reported visible fire and smoke coming from the former commercial building that had been turned into a residential structure.
The EFD says reports of homeless activity and possible people inside prompted an interior search but no one was found.
The department says crews encountered flames in “multiple areas of the building.”
At one point, a portion of the roof began to collapse, prompting an order for all firefighters to evacuate the building.
Crews transitioned to a defensive operation and brought the fire under control in just over an hour.
No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.
Crews have returned to the scene periodically to monitoring hotspots.
