A community nutrition initiative is in the works in Evansville. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
The University of Evansville says its Center for Innovation and Change will lead the new initiative after the city received a 125-thousand dollar grant.
The award -- granted to just seven cities nationwide -- will support expanded healthy food access, nutrition education, and family engagement programs across the six schools that make up the Evansville Promise Neighborhood.
UE says the funding will help strengthen and expand healthy food pantries and garden snack walls at the schools.
It will also provide cooking classes and healthy food workshops during engagement nights, as well as opportunities for students and families to plant, harvest, and prepare fresh produce.
Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry says the grant will help break down barriers to nutritious food while expanding programs that improve quality of life for local residents.
Other community partners include the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, the Mayor's Food Council, including FEED Evansville, the Tri-State Food Bank, Bedford Collab, and others.
