The Citizens Action Coalition says CenterPoint Energy urged the U.S. Department of Energy to allow the shut down of a coal-fired power plant in Warrick County, IN

An advocacy group says CenterPoint Energy asked the federal government to allow the closure of a coal-fired power plant in Warrick County. But as WNIN’s John Gibson reports, the Trump Administration said no:

In a February letter obtained by the Citizens Action Coalition, CenterPoint urged the Trump Administration to not reissue an emergency order to keep the F.B. Cully plant open.

Instead, the administration announced in March that the plant near Newburgh – as well as the R.M. Schahfer Generating Station in Wheatfield -- would stay open through at least June 21st of this year.

Democratic State Rep. Alex Burton of Evansville says the U.S. Department of Energy completely ignored CenterPoint's concerns and the input of other stakeholders about the Warrick County plant.

Burton says keeping the Culley facility online with its 18-million dollar price tag is “completely irresponsible” and a slap in the face of Hoosier taxpayers who are struggling with soaring utility bills.
