Indiana State Senator Jim Tomes speaks during an IURC listening session in Evansville, April 7, 2026

Indiana State Sen. Jim Tomes of Wadesville says he discussed high utility bills and meter concerns with CenterPoint Energy executives

Indiana State Senator Jim Tomes says he met with CenterPoint Energy executives in Indianapolis this week about high energy bills and electric meters. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:

The Posey County Republican says he and his wife met with CenterPoint leaders one day after an IURC listening session in Evansville.

During that session, Tomes told commissioners about his constituents’ CenterPoint bills:

"When it goes from $300 one month to 900 the next, you've got to wonder something’s wrong."

Tomes also expressed concerns that he’s heard about new electric meters on people’s homes.

He talked about his own:

"It reads all zeros and then all eights and then it goes to about a six-digit number and then it just flashes back and forth. I don't know if they're workin’ right."

During his one-hour meeting with CenterPoint executives, Tomes said he showed copies of people's utility bills, discussed multiple individual charges on the bills, and concerns about the reliability and accuracy of the smart meters.

Tomes called it a "productive meeting.”
Since the meeting, Tomes said he’s received messages from the executives stating they “have things to work on” and would get back to him “as soon as possible.”
