All four lanes of Riverside Drive have reopened in Downtown Evansville after full repairs to a sinkhole

For the first time in 13 months, all four lanes of Riverside Drive are open in Downtown Evansville. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Crews have finally repaired the sinkhole that developed in February 2025.

The hole grew, damaged underground sewer lines, and forced crews to close all four lanes last April.

Heavy spring rains and stubbornly high river levels turned what initially looked like an easy repair into a major reconstruction project.

Water in the hole often created conditions that were too dangerous for repair crews.

Some nearby residents and businesses also reported sewage and water backups in their basements.

Crews were able to open one lane of traffic in each direction in November.

Now, traffic is flowing on our four lanes – two each way.

On Wednesday Morning, March 25, 2026, SE Riverside Drive in Evansville is fully open to traffic for the first time in nearly one year, due to the large sinkhole that opened in the northbound side of the road. Repairs cost about $7 million and were delayed several times due to weather. (For vision impaired: traffic is shown traveling in nearly all directional lanes, with trucks, utility vans and passenger vehicles. It is sunny, causing a glare on the roadway.)
