On Tuesday, March 24, a driver heading eastbound on Washington Avenue in Evansville crossed traffic, hopped the curb, and drove through two lawns before crashing into this garage. According to the Evansville Police Department, the driver suffered a medical incident while driving. No one was home during the crash. The driver was transported to an area hospital for unspecified injuries.

Historically, medical incidents have caused 20,000 crashes per year according to one study; no one at home injured

A set of tracks in the grass across two residential lots tells the story — a driver left the roadway on Washington avenue, missing a utility pole and trees before crashing into a garage.

Evansville Police believe a Tuesday afternoon crash on the city's east side happened when the driver suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel.

First responders received the call at 12:10 PM on Tuesday, concerning a one-vehicle crash on the 4200 block of Washington Avenue.

The driver was headed east on Washington, when police believe they experienced a medical emergency.

EPD Officer Taylor Merriss was at the scene.

“It was determined that the driver came off the roadway, navigated through the yard of a couple homes and then ended up crashing into the garage of this home.”

Luckily no one was home at the time. The driver received medical attention and was transported to an area hospital.

Merriss says they don’t know what medical emergency occurred or injuries they may have sustained.

Someone from the Building Commission will assess the structural integrity and safety of the home.

According to a 2010 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 49,868 drivers were reported to have been involved in crashes "precipitated by drivers’ medical emergencies." This is annualized to approximately 20,000 per year or 1.3-percent of all drivers in the survey.
