An Evansville man is accused of running for office when he was banned from doing so. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office says 61-year-old Kenneth Colbert filed paperwork to run as a Republican candidate for delegate to the GOP state convention.
County Clerk Dottie Thomas said Colbert completed paperwork that included a signature affirming he met all requirements for the office.
But the Republican Party had declared Colbert ineligible to run for office due to “not being in good standing” with the party.
Then-Republican Chairman Mike Duckworth accused Colbert of misconduct within the party and ineligible to run for office as a Republican through 2029.
Colbert frequently called for Duckworth to be removed as party chair.
The sheriff’s office says the County Clerk confirmed that Colbert had been served paperwork notifying him of his ineligibility.
He’s charged with Falsely Making a Declaration of Candidacy, a Class A Misdemeanor.
Colbert owns the North Side business Seek and Find Consignments.
