Drivers in the Newburgh area may be alerted when an emergency vehicle is nearby. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
The Ohio Township Fire Department says it’s enhancing road safety with the Safety Cloud by HAAS Alert system.
The Warrick County department says with the purchase of three engines from Pierce Manufacturing in 2023, the system has already alerted more than 30-thousand motorists.
The system transmits digital alerts to nearby drivers when emergency vehicles are responding to incidents.
The department says Indiana’s Move Over laws require drivers to slow down and change lanes for active emergency vehicles, but flashing lights and sirens often don’t provide enough warning to drivers, especially at high speeds or in poor visibility.
The automatic Safety Cloud warnings appear on Waze and Apple Maps and certain vehicle dashboards.
The system requires no action from drivers beyond using their regular navigation apps.
