Senator Jim Tomes of the 49th Senate District already had a general election challenger in USI Professor Cindi Clayton, Democrat.
He’ll now also have a primary challenger in Republican Brandi Durham Pugh. Tomes said he’s enjoyed the support of his constituents for four terms.
“I do appreciate the support that I receive,” Tomes said in an earlier interview. “I've had four terms … I think it's important to have legislators who understand the concept I'm talking about, and that is to be available for folks.”
Tomes prides himself on his accessibility.
President Trump had threatened to enlist primary challengers to Republicans who didn’t back Indiana’s redistricting. Tomes did vote for redistricting in December, though the measure ultimately failed.
Regarding the Indiana House — District 64 Republican State Rep Matt Hostettler now has a general election Democrat challenger in Candace Greer.
