The city of Evansville has launched "We Read," a program to help kids read at "grade level"

The city of Evansville and several partners have launched a program to improve reading skills. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:

The We Read program was launched yesterday (Wed) on World Read-Aloud Day.

Mayor Stephanie Terry says the goal of the initiative is to help more children read at grade level by the end of the third grade.

Partners include the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library, Mattingly Charities, the Mayor’s Education Roundtable, and the Evansville Promise Neighborhood.

Mattingly Charities and the YMCA will provide a grant to Promise Neighborhood kids for 13 books.

Terry says We Read is also supported families, churches, businesses, nonprofits, and individuals.
