On Wednesday January 7, Vanderburgh County Clerk Dottie Thomas hands Randy Damm of Vanderburgh County his paperwork. He is running for republican state election delegate — one of the 36 open county positions.
“State delegate helps elect individuals such as lieutenant governor,” Damm said. “This is only my second year of filing, so I was involved in the election of Micah Beckwith for lieutenant governor.”
Such delegates will be responsible for choosing positions like Secretary of State in 2026.
Between the 2026 primary election in May and General election in November, there are 36 open positions affecting Vanderburgh County. These include anyone from the Perry Township Advisory Board, to the County Sheriff currently held by Democrat Noah Robinson, who hasn't formally announced his reelection.
The window for candidate filings closes Feb. 6 at noon. Statewide candidates include Secretary of State, Treasurer of State and Auditor of State.
Damm said his experience as a delegate has been educational, “even at 75-years old.”
He urges public participation in the election process. “You need to be informed,” he said. “That's the main thing. And you need to get involved, because you can't complain if you don't get involved and things aren't going your way. You got to be part of the process.”
Delegate candidates like Damm only have to worry about the primary election.
