Blue Bridge Reopening Delayed Again

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet

The Glover Carey Bridge in Owensboro, KY — commonly known as the "Blue Bridge" — will remain closed until the end of January

The reopening of the Blue Bridge at Owensboro has been delayed again. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says it received notice from American Contracting on Monday that the closure of the Glover Cary Bridge will likely be extended until the end of January.

That’s about two weeks beyond the most recent projected reopening date.

The deck work on the bridge was originally planned as just a 90-day closure between July 1st and Oct. 1st of last year.

After construction began in July, additional steel repair needs were identified on the bridge.

The transportation cabinet says the latest delay comes after American failed to work numerous days during the Thanksgiving,

Christmas and New Year's holiday weeks that had been built into their construction schedule.

As of Monday, the commonwealth has charged the company more than $1.5 million in “liquidated damages” for failure to meet contractual obligations.

The 85-year-old two-lane bridge connects Spencer County and downtown Owensboro.
The multi-lane Natcher Bridge, just east of Owensboro, remains the detour.
