Leaders are asking the head of the U.S. Navy to name a new warship after Evansville, IN

Area leaders are calling for a warship to be named after the city of Evansville. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

U.S. Senator Todd Young and 8th District Representative Mark Messmer made the request in a letter to Navy Secretary John Phelan
.
Young and Messmer point to the city’s contributions to the nation’s defense during wartime, including the massive production of ships, airplanes, and ammunition during World War II.

The city of Evansville has already been designated a World War II Heritage City by the National Parks Service.

Young and Messmer say a naval ship named after Evansville would fit the city’s legacy and honor the contributions of men and women who have defended the nation.

They told the navy secretary they welcome the opportunity to advance the proposal.
