EVPL Approves Plan to Buy Former Credit Union

Allison Masterson and son Caleb, 3, read about animals in the children's area of Red Bank Library in Evansville's west side, Thursday Nov. 20. She didn't realize it was to be razed next month. "It doesn't seem that old," she said. "I remember it being built."

The Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library Board has conditionally approved buying a former credit union for use as a temporary library

The Evansville Vanderburgh Library Board has approved a plan to purchase a building that will serve as a temporary branch on the city’s West Side. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

The EVPL is looking to open the branch in the former Liberty Federal Credit Union next door to Red Bank Library, which has closed and will be rebuilt.

The board approved buying the former credit union last week, with a couple of provisions -- including any possible environmental issues.

Board Treasurer Robert Musgrave made the motion during the board’s final scheduled meeting of the year:

"And I move that we go ahead and agree to this with all the provisions except for the two mentioned and those will be allowed to be agreed to — those two provisions — subject to subsequent approval of the body. And if all else fails, we'll have a special meeting."

The plan is to provide library services in the former credit union during demolition and reconstruction of Red Bank.

The project calls for a larger facility and is the next step in the EVPL’s Master Facilities Plan.
