A PDF vs. Word issue left the city of Evansville's application for a road paving grant unsigned, missing out on as much as $1 million

The city of Evansville will miss out on up to a million dollars in road paving money due to a clerical error. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

Mayor Terry’s communications director, Joe Atkinson, confirms the city applied for the maximum one-million dollars in Community Crossing matching funds.

But he points out fewer state dollars created a more competitive process and there was no guarantee Evansville would get the full amount.

Vanderburgh County did receive its full one-million dollar grant but a PDF-versus-Word document issue accidentally left the mayor’s signature off the city’s application.

City Engineer Mike Labitzke says the mayor had signed the form but an earlier unsigned version of the application was incorrectly attached and sent to the state.

Labitzke says by the time the city spoke to INDOT, “it was too late to correct the mistake.”

Atkinson says the city will continue to do road work this spring with about two-million dollars allocated for paving in the 2026 budget.
